Children and teachers from local schools were invited to experience the workings of a large rural estate at a recent Atholl Estates’ Open Day. Activities took place in the historic grounds of Blair Castle and more than 1500 children were introduced to activities such as line casting, tree climbing, tractor and trailer rides and nature-themed quizzes with the Atholl Estates Ranger Service. The children aged from nursery to P7 came from schools such as Goodlyburn Primary, Dunkeld Nursery, St Ninians Episcopal Primary and Logierait Primary.
The activities were split into nine different areas ranging from Gamekeepers corner where the children met ferrets, gundogs and deer ponies, to ‘make up your own pony’ in preparation of the horse trails event which is being held at the castle on 26th to 29th August. Other areas included a country access code quiz and dressing up in traditional historic fashions whilst identifying mystery objects. However, the favourite areas were the tree climbing demonstrations and sheep clipping.
The free event was designed to offer a fun and interactive way of demonstrating some of the outdoor tasks that take place on the estate day to day whilst learning about the traditions and history that are on their doorstep.
Atholl Estates warmly welcomes children and families and regular events include children’s tours of Blair Castle, vintage tractor and trailer rides around the estate grounds and nature-themed Ranger Service activities. For further information please visit www.atholl-estates.co.uk
